Is Costa Maya safe?

Yes without a doubt! There are only about 1,000 people living in Costa Maya/Mahahual and almost all of them are living from the tourism industry and the Costa Maya cruise port. This is such a sleepy town, that crime is non-existing. You can roam the streets without any problem, the only people that may be bothering you are the ones that want to sell you something but a friendly 'no, gracias' is enough to keep them away.

Is Cozumel safe?

It's worth noting that crime rates can vary depending on the location and time of day.

The Mexican government and local police have taken several measures to ensure the safety of tourists in recent years.
The island has a robust police presence and the tourist areas are routinely patrolled.

In addition, Cozumel is a major cruise ship destination and the cruise port is heavily monitored,
with security personnel ensuring the safety of passengers as they come and go.

The rates of violent and drug-related crimes are far lower in Cozumel than in other parts of Mexico.
Likewise, there is very little drug-related violence or activity by drug cartels on the island.

Missing in Cozumel

Meanwhile on Mexico's Caribbean coast a US scuba diver who had been staying at the Allegro Hotel on the island of Cozumel was reported missing on the afternoon of January 16, 2023, after going out on a group dive to the Santa Rosa reef to the south.

The emergency call from his dive-boat followed a reported 15-minute underwater search after he had failed to resurface. Currents in the area were said to be strong at the time. The Naval Search, Rescue & Maritime Surveillance Station searched the area, with an alert going out to boats as far away as Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Are There Crocodiles in Cozumel?

Both Morelet's and American crocodiles have stable populations on the island, thanks to conservation efforts and their relatively shy disposition that keeps them away from human conflict.

Cozumel locals are very much aware of their reptilian neighbors and usually know how to coexist with them peacefully. Signs and warnings are often placed near habitats to alert visitors.

So, if you pay attention and stick to designated paths and swimming areas, there's really little to worry about.
