Stalefish

Sean Mortimer

Chronicle Books
680 Second Street, San Francisco, California 94107

A classic collection of skateboarding lore and legend straight from the heart of the icons that created it. - Juice Magazine

Skateboarding's formative years and milestones eroded before they were documented. Stalefish captures those stories in a way skateboarders old and new can relate to. A necessary book. - TransWorld SKATEboarding

This book may not settle the sport versus subculture versus cult debate, but with stories of skate-induced ulcers, skatepark torture, ramp arson, trespassing, the birth of punk, and more, it captures like no other how skateboarding can derail your life in a beautiful way.

The Skateboarder's Journal
Lives on Board

Jack Smith

"The Skateboarder's Journal - Lives on Board" is now available.

A piece of wood, two trucks, four wheels...a skateboard.

You start by rolling down a sidewalk, and end up rolling through life. For some the ride stops at the end of the street; for others the ride never ends. This book was written by those for whom the ride is never-ending: by the 15-year old grom who falls asleep dreaming of skateboarding; by the 40-something "pad dad" you see at the local skatepark; by the women whose stories have never been told; and by the 73-year old architect who didn't begin skateboarding until the tender age of 65.

These are just a few of the stories you will find in this book. You might even find your story inside...just written by someone else.

I am stoked to announce that the soft-cover version of "The Skateboarder's Journal - Lives on Board" is now available to order. The book looks great thanks to the efforts of designer Adrian Pina and editor Jonathan Harms, both of whom devoted an incredible amount of time and energy to this project (both are still making tweaks here and there).

The book is available from a few different sources:
Direct from me - If you would like a signed copy use this method.
From Lulu.com, probably the quickest way to get the book, since they are the printer and will ship directly to you.
From Amazon.com, if you usually order your books from Amazon you can order the book there.

For those of you who have pre-ordered the book it will begin shipping in a few days. I would like to thank all the skaters who contributed to the book. I would also thank all of you who have pre-ordered the book for being so patient.

All the best,
Jack Smith

What people are saying ...

An amazing book, a great addition to skateboarding history...Stacy Peralta

GET IT!!! IT IS AMAZING..full of amazing stories, funny, sad, gnarly, you will laugh your face off!!!...Carole Rubin

The book is great. Grassroots and Groovy...Wynn Miller

Very cool book of skateboard stories!!!!...Christopher Zsarnay

Damn. Every time I pick up and read something astounding. Amazing. Life changing. How great is skateboarding? How great it is that you've assembled IT in one place!?! My wife likes it! Easy to share. You've captured the essence of generations of skateboarders; it's a true 'bible'...Jim Fitzpatrick

I got the book today, now I understand what an enormous job you have done, I am touched when I see all the text in this work the history of skateboarding...Patrik Sonesson

Amazing. The most unique and authentic expression of skateboarding culture I've seen in a long time. Great framing of the experiences, folklore and personalities that connect us as skaters, and great underscoring of the spirit of the sport and a very cool time in our lives. Awesome...Alain Mazer

I just received my copy of 'Lives on Board.' Looks great and the content is put together quite well...Joel Mora

The book is more than Awesome. It is a skater's dream...Jeff Haynes

Oh my goodness, it is truly awesome and amazing! Thank you for putting it together, you can feel the time, dedication and passion that was put into it! It's just plain rad and I love it! Thank you for sharing this with us!...Laura Harbert

Stacy's opening story about the fence and the mail woman is classic, and perfect. With all he's done, to pick that story to open the book is a stroke of genius...still reading. Thanks again...Rick Floyd

There are some real gems in this collection. Some are short and funny. Others are deep and exhaustive. But every one of the stories are interesting in their own way. Jack threw his net pretty wide when he called for articles, and that's maybe the best thing about the book. You can read about a guy who pushed a longboard across China in one section, and the next minute you can learn what it was like to grow up in Dogtown in the 70's. There are so many facets to skateboarding. I think Jack did a great job of capturing in this book what skateboarding has meant to so many of us...Gary Fluitt

It is amazing true work of art and history! Thanks for putting such a cool idea on paper...Brian Roller

A Secret History Of The Ollie - Volume 1: The 1970's
Craig B.Snyder
First Edition 2015 - www.OllieBook.com

Every culture has a creation myth, and skateboarding is no different. The Ollie forged a new identity for skateboarding after its invention in the 1970's, and it lies at the root of nearly every significant move in street skating today. This groundbreaking no-handed aerial has also affected the evolution of surfing and snowboarding, and has left a permanent impression upon popular culture and language. This is the story of the Ollie, the technology that set the stage for its creation, the pioneers who made it happen, and the skaters who used it to start a revolution.

"'A Secret History Of The Ollie' will rewrite skateboarding history as we know it." - Betsy Gordon, Smithsonian

"It is seriously the best book I've read yet on skateboarding history - the intimate details as well as the broad view of the industry and pastime is phenomenal." - Nexka Pfeifer, curator, Sidewalk Surfing: The Art & Culture of Skateboarding, The Everhart Museum

Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion

Jürgen Blümlein, Dirk Vogel, Cap10
Published by Gingko Press

The way apparel has been worn and created by skateboarders over the past 50 years has had a tremendous impact on popular culture at large. In Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion, the authors have taken great effort to document all aspects of this aesthetic movement; from its roots in the 1950s as an offshoot of surfing culture, through the early 1980s when skateboarding “found itself” after a crucial underground period of soul searching and DIY expressions of individuality. Early generations of surfers and skaters wore coastal lifestyle brands such as Jantzen, Hang Ten, Jams, Vans and Hobie. As the culture progressed and developed its own distinct identity, brands core to the scene such as Vans, Santa Cruz, Powell-Peralta, Sims, Alva, Jimmy’Z and many more jumped into the fray with their own apparel. Nearly every area of garment design was touched by skate wear’s aesthetic – influencing the design and fashion of innumerable media from printed T-shirts to board shorts and denim to track suits along the way. Telling the inside story of skate couture in the words of those who lived it, Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion features original commentary from designers, company founders, and pro skateboarders who have defined skateboarding’s look for entire generations. Skate personalities we meet include Stacy Peralta, Lance Mountain, Tony Alva, Brad Bowman, Steve Olson, Steve Caballero, Steve Van Doren, and many more. Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion even addresses the design influence of accessories and safety gear ranging from helmets to kneepads and gloves, not to mention accessories such as bags. Skateboarding’s unique attitude and style have captured the imagination of millions over the decades – and Skateboarding Is Not A Fashion Vol 1. is the culture’s magnum opus lookbook.

Made for Skate: The Illustrated History of Skateboard Footwear

Jürgen Blümlein, Daniel C. Schmid, Dirk Vogel

In the skateboard universe the evolution of riding technique, skateboard decks, graphics and art are well documented. Until now, however, skateboard shoes have received little attention. Made for Skate tells the story of skateboard footwear as seen through the eyes of those who lived it.

Along with the classics by companies such as Vans, Airwalk, Etnies, and Duffs it features hard-to-find and one-of-a-kind shoes that emerged throughout almost five decades of skate history all photographed superlatively.

This book provides an exhaustive overview of the history and styles of skate shoes and is based on the collection of the Museum of Skateboard History in Stuttgart, Germany. Discover, for instance, why the legendary Bones Brigade had to scrounge for shoes at the height of their fame and how key design features such as the lace saver provided protection and functionality.

Skate personalities we meet include Stacy Peralta, Lance Mountain, Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Natas Kaupas, Don Brown, Paul Rodriguez, Chad Muska, Mike Vallely, Adrian Lopez, Mark Gonzalez, Tim Gavin, and many more.

Shoe designers featured include James Arizumi, Jeremy Fish, Andy Howell and Todd Bratrud.

Urethane Revolution: The Birth of Skate - San Diego 1975

by John O'Malley
April 22, 2019

One crazy year on the California coast--in 1975 a hippie skunkworks, bred in garages and shacks, launched the modern skater movement. Strap in for a wild ride replete with two car chases, two plane crashes, a massive truck bomb, Colombian narcos, the Mafia, senior White House staff, a gypsy fortuneteller, three straight-up miracles, Jacques Cousteau, big piles of cocaine and naked hippie chicks. Author John O'Malley was in the thick of it all, and he retraces the trip that starts with a bang and races to a melt-in-your-mouth ending.

Skate Escape

Peter Soutullo

"I originally started skating because it looked ridiculously fun and I absolutely wanted to be able to ollie over stuff and do other tricks too. The meaning of my skateboarding has changed a little over the 12 years that I've been, I guess what you could call an "active member" of the skateboard industry, but the feeling still remains the same. It's ridiculously fun! It's different, you don't have to have an organized team or organization, there are no rules, just creativity."
