TESTIMONY

Blessed with Christian parents and grandparents, I was saved at an early age and my earliest memories are of going to church regularly. Scouting was a main focus for my Jr. High years in Hawaii where Dad was stationed in the Navy. The highlight was obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout in 1956. I was a leader in both junior and senior high youth groups in my local church and became the area leader of the local Christian Endeavor (CE) for the So. Calif. area for a year.

After high school came several jobs and marriage in 1963 to the cute little blond girl who lived down the street. That was over 50 years ago and is still the second best decision I ever made. Of course the first was accepting Jesus Christ as savior in 1956 at a Youth Summer Camp in Idyllwild, California. Being a full-time worker and a student carrying 12 units per semester at night for four years was trying but satisfying when the A.A. degree was finally earned in 1964. No more school until the Lord opened the door for a free education at a Christian College in 1974. Along the way while working at my own Honda Motorcycle Dealership I moved across the street from a guy you may know, Chuck Seldon. That was a life changing association that is still going on today. Chuck and I have been through the experience in New Cuyama with the Foundation for Airborne Relief organization and have then supported each other and our families ever since. I cannot relate here all the blessings and “blessings” that the past 40+ years knowing and working with Chuck have brought into my life. We have beat each other up on the tennis courts, around the ping pong table, almost died on a skiing trip in Wrightwood, rode Chuck’s 4-wheelers behind his house in California, cleaned out a ton of clothes from his rental house, rode bikes all over Boise, and a long time ago in New Cuyama we lived on pig milk, food gleaned from local fields and donated stale bakery products, AND we each swam 50 miles and earned the Red Cross Swim-Fit award and patch. As two families bonded by an unwavering faith in Christ, we have laughed and cried together through some happy, sad, and “interesting” moments including the current times we find ourselves in.

My major focus outside work has always been my local church association. Choir and praise team singing, holding positions of Deacon or Elder in several churches depending on where the job took us, and currently the Deacon of Finance/Human Relations here in the Estacada First Baptist Church. My “specialty” has been to create the Fund Accounting system needed by churches to track the various ministry assets for proper accounting.

While I do not possess the academic credentials to be a spokesperson challenging current public school curricula, I am willing to play a small part to bring His name back into our public schools. But then God never really relied on a person’s credentials to accomplish His purposes. For example, when He needed to deliver the Israelites, God picked a baby who was then under a death threat to be put in a basket in the Nile River to start the process. When a king over Israel was needed God picked a sheep herder, the youngest son in his family. And, when He needed a savior for the world, he started with a young girl, willing to do whatever was needed, resulting in a baby being born in a stable. As the song says, this is such a strange way to save the world, but it is God’s way which is always the best way!

I am pleased to accept the position of Treasurer of Our Godly American Heritage and look forward to learning more about the organization, its mission, goals, and getting to know my fellow Board Members, whose arms may be as sore as mine from the “volunteer persuasion techniques” applied by Chuck to get you on the Board.

Welcome to the Boise Tennis Coalition

• What is the tennis coalition? The Boise Tennis Coalition is a fun-loving group of men and women who, regardless of skill and experience, enjoy participating in the life-long sport of tennis. We have approximately 100 members.


• Where do we play? Julia Davis Park is our primary site. However, in fun-loving group of men and women who, regardless of skill and experience, deference to an occasional tournament there, our secondary site is the Community Center Courts adjacent to the Senior Center.


• What is the play schedule? Typically, we play Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday starting at 8:00 a.m. and usually ending around 11:00 a.m. The time of day may vary depending on weather and season. During the winter months, we play from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Community Center Courts.


• Is a specific age and/or skill required to participate? While the majority of our members are older and have experience playing tennis, we welcome all ages and skill levels. For the beginner, free tennis instruction is provided.


• What are the goals/benefits of the Coalition? Our main purpose is to provide the opportunity of playing tennis to anyone who is interested. Along with tennis, however, includes the benefit of physical activity laughter, and fellowship. Also, the Coalition is the driving force behind an effort to build an indoor tennis facility in Boise City.


• Is there a membership fee? Membership in the Coalition is free, however, a minimum annual donation of $10.00 is suggested. Donated monies are used in the writing and development of grants for the purpose of making an indoor tennis facility a reality

The Boise Weekly newspaper ran an article describing Chuck Seldon’s initiative to help returning veterans adjust to “normal life” with the assistance of the Boise Tennis Coalition. The article was published in October 2011, but the program continues today, through 2013 and beyond.

“A local group is hoping to help ease veterans back into civilian life with some friendly games of tennis. The Boise Tennis Coalition is a collective of senior citizens that meets a few times a week to trade volleys of a less-than-lethal nature.

“’A lot of veterans are coming back soon, and when they do, they’re separated from their life-and-death buddies in the service,’ said Charles Seldon, president of the Boise Tennis Coalition. ‘Then they get into town and there are no jobs. They sit home and think that this is the country they fought for and now they can’t get a job, or anything! A lot of them have battle fatigue and others have mental stress, so we’re hoping some tennis can make things a little easier on them.’“

“Though the Boise Tennis Coalition is primarily made up of senior citizens, all ages and skill levels are welcome. The Coalition has members who teach lessons, and they intend to help beginners and novices become familiar with the game. In addition to free lessons, veterans will be provided free rackets, balls and other necessary supplies to get them started.

“‘The point of this is to have fun,’ said Seldon. ‘Tennis is just such a fun game because you get to come here and have a good work out, make friends, have fellowship and enjoy the game.’“
